Coverage

Do you cover international subjects?

Yes! Our system translates and transliterates names and content from across over 140 different languages. This means we can find and read content about any subject in any language from the 3.5 trillion of webpages, 210 million of corporate records, thousands of news sites, global sanctions, PEPs and watchlists and various datasets that Xapien ingests. We translate whatever we find that is relevant to your subject back into English for you.

Is the sanctions/watchlist screening part of the Xapien subscription?

Yes it is – we include sanctions / PEPs & other watchlist screening as part of the subscription and indeed the data is provided from ComplyAdvantage.

Does Xapien cover social media?

We provide the urls to social media pages, where they are publicly available. But we don’t run the content from these profiles through out Natural Language Processing (NLP) engine. This means that Xapien users can view the pages for themselves if they have the relevant permissions. This is because we know that our clients have different requirements when it comes to how deeply they need to scrutinise an individual’s personal and professional background, so we were conscious that we didn’t want to ‘overstep the line’ when it came to social media. Our product roadmap is led by our users, and the social media landscape is continually evolving, so if you feel that there is business-critical information on certain sites that we currently don’t cover then just let us know and we can think about how best to serve your needs.

How Xapien works

What data do you have?

Xapien isn't a data company (we get asked this quite a bit). We’re an AI company that searches, reads, and researches open source content from the entire indexed internet to provide comprehensive background research reports on individuals and organisations. We do integrate 0.5bn corporate records from international corporate registries, and data from leading pep/sanctions/watchlists screening providers, but we do so much more than that. We analyse and consolidate data from 35 trillion website pages - the entire indexed internet!

How are you different to ChatGPT?

Generative AI alone can't be used for due diligence as it lacks structured compliance datasets, doesn't provide insight into specific individuals or entities, is prone to hallucination, and is inconsistent. Subtle changes in how you ask a question can lead to big changes in results. Xapien is designed for due diligence professionals. It researches and triangulates across structured data such as sanctions lists and unstructured data from the entire indexed internet. Data verification is built into the product through our multi-source approach. Our cutting-edge anti-hallucination technology adds a final layer of reliability. Xapien is designed to surface the world’s information about a specific individual or entity. By breaking down silos between different data sets, Xapien can distinguish between different individuals with the same or similar names. Xapien also unlocks complex criminal matters. Our triangulation technology enables Xapien to draw links and uncover keys that unlock large-scale money laundering and other criminal efforts. Xapien is unbiased and consistent. Our pre-trained models ensure you get the same answers every time, so you’re not reliant on user-led prompt engineering. Information that Xapien surfaces are fully sourced down to sentence level so you can use them to make confident decisions.

How long does a typical report take?

Report generation averages at around 7 minutes, but there is some variation in this. Reports on individuals with common names often take longer, as Xapien wants to make sure it sends relevant content only, and so it takes time to match your subject with relevant information, and discard all the false positives. Company reports also typically take longer than reports on individuals as they often have larger online profiles.

How accurate is your AI?

We pride ourselves on our accuracy and see reducing false positives as one of our core selling points. But our NLP and inference goes far beyond name matching. Using Machine Learning, we have taught the system to identify the ‘meaning’ of words, for example to ‘poach’ eggs being different to ‘poaching’ elephants and also when potentially risky terms are negated, for example working in ‘counter’-narcotics. That said, what we are trying to do is very hard and no AI is 100% accurate so there will be times when we get it wrong. Please use the feedback buttons or get in touch with your Customer Success manager directly to let us know about these instances as we are continually working to improve the tool. The more examples of where it has gone wrong, the better we can make it.

How does Xapien reduce false positive risks?

Xapien’s Neural Risk Classifier can understand the meaning of words (e.g. free software trial versus a court trial). Xapien can also understand directionality of risk – whether the person is doing the risky thing or having the risky thing done to them. And, using Natural Language Processing, Xapien can understand if the person quoted is talking about a risky thing rather than doing it (e.g. Chris Smith said that “money laundering is a serious concern for the UK economy“).

How does Xapien specifically identify risk areas / adverse findings – specifically around potential behavioural issues?

We use machine learning to teach the system about topics and themes that are considered risky. The systems learns from these words in many sentences and can then spot other words that are often used in the same context. We have taught the system to identify the ‘meaning’ of words, for example to poach eggs being different to poaching elephants and also when potentially risky terms are negated, for example working in counter-narcotics. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and inference of risk from written content is a significant differentiator for us. Whilst the system still has some way to go in mastering language with the fidelity that a human does, it is evident how what we have today is generations ahead of other vendors looking to infer risk from written content.

What languages does Xapien work in?

Xapien works across 100+ languages. We use Google Translate for this after evaluating 20 providers for their accuracy. The system runs our neural risk engine across all translated content to find risks that may only appear in non-English language results.

Privacy

How does Xapien encrypt searches and data?

The search screen is accessed through https which is an encrypted and secure method of you sending over the search terms to us. This is the same technology that online banking and payment providers use for transferring secure information.
The data is processed on our servers and is encrypted when at rest. We use AWS and the significant protection afforded by them for all processing. As we go out to the internet and search, there is no connection back to you – the traffic is ‘washed’ with the other reports we are running. The report is then viewed using https – again encrypted.

Do you have a retention/deletion policy?

We can set custom, automated retention and deletion policies for all our customers. Please let us know if you would like to do this.

Can I share Xapien reports with other people?

The best way to share reports is to use the share button at the top of the report. This allows you to share the report with colleagues in their fully interactive online format. Colleagues who do not have Xapien accounts will be able to open a ‘read only’ version of the report but won’t be able to run any searches themselves. To keep a permanent record of our reports you can save them as a PDF.

Search engines are great but they are only the starting point. Finding, reading and condensing the full picture is slow, hard, and painstaking work. Xapien can help.
